When Hali's husband needs to research something, he goes ALL IN.
YouTube videos, Reddit threads, expert articles—he devours everything he can find. But here's the kicker: despite all that research, he still won't believe something works until he tries it himself.
Classic 1/3 profile energy.
In this week's Human Design Hive episode, we break down the 1/3 profile, those knowledge gatherers and experimenters who build their wisdom through hands-on experience.
What makes a 1/3 unique?
This profile combines two "lower trigram" lines, making it the most self-focused profile in Human Design. That's not a bad thing! It simply means 1/3’s process information in a deeply personal way.
Line 1 (the Investigator) craves knowledge and builds solid foundations before taking action. They want to understand everything about a topic before diving in.
Line 3 (the Martyr) learns through experimentation. They need to touch, manipulate, and experience things firsthand. For them, mistakes aren't failures, they're valuable data points.
Together, these energies create someone who:
Researches exhaustively before trying something
Won't trust something until they've tested it themselves
Builds credibility through lived experience
Becomes a trusted source of wisdom for others
1/3’s across different types
Your Human Design type influences how this profile expresses:
For Generators and MG’s: The sacral response guides what they research and experiment with. They need freedom to try, fail, and restart without shame.
For Projectors: Their wisdom naturally attracts others, there’s no need to push or prove themselves. The right people will find and value their lived experience.
For Manifestors: They need space for deep research followed by action. Informing others about their process prevents interruptions.
For Reflectors: They need alone time to distinguish their true interests from environmental conditioning.
1/3’s in real life
To show the variety within this profile, we looked at three famous 1/3’s:
Beyoncé (1/3 Manifesting Generator): Her deep connection to rhythm and willingness to experiment with different musical styles shows her balancing research with hands-on creation.
Pablo Picasso (1/3 Projector): His structuring and abstraction channels perfectly aligned with his artistic innovation—mastering traditional techniques before breaking all the rules.
Amy Poehler (1/3 Manifestor): Her improv background exemplifies the experimental one-three energy, learning through doing, not afraid of mistakes.
Are you a 1/3?
If you are, remember that your life is meant to be your laboratory. Your gift is the wisdom that comes from balancing research with real-world experience.
Your challenges might include:
Fear of failure (conditioning around that line 3 energy)
Getting stuck in research mode without taking action
Or jumping into things without proper preparation
The key? Trust that both sides of your profile serve a purpose. Your experiments aren't mistakes, they're the path to embodied wisdom.
